Marisela Oropeza was born in Hammond, Indiana on September of 1979. She was raised by a single-parent migrant family. As a migrant child, Marisela resided in Michoacan, Mexico and in different parts of California. The continuous traveling helped her develop a love towards the arts and build on her creative insights as an adult. When she began drawing and painting with oils at the age of 17, she knew that she had encountered a new motivation in her young life.
After graduating from Delano High School in 1997, Marisela enrolled at California State University of Bakersfield (CSUB), but soon after, she learned about her father’s deteriorating illness and moved to Mexico to help care for him. While living in Mexico, she taught art and bilingual education on an independent basis. This experience helped her acquire a love for working with students as well as with new art mediums. About a year after teaching in Mexico, Marisela moved to Guadalupe, California where she enrolled as a part time student. She also became involved in the arts within the community and exhibited her art work in several local galleries and exhibitions within Santa Barbara County, including the annual Arts Grapes and Grains Festival. |
In 2004, Marisela returned to Delano and re-enrolled at Cal State Bakersfield. There, she began teaching art in elementary schools. One of her main goals was to motivate her students by displaying their artwork in public exhibitions, such as The Kern County Fair and the Bakersfield Museum of Art. She also hoped to broaden their perspectives within the arts and to express to them her notions that art has no limits.
Currently, Marisela displays her work in art related events and exhibitions in California and South Carolina. A few of her pieces are likewise seen in art expos in Michoacan, Mexico. She also works as an artist in residency for different schools in Delano, and was owner and gallery manager of La Galeria (2010-2012). Marisela feels that working within a field that she really loves will lead her to become a good role model for the students she works with and for future generations yet to come. She is fully aware that making art has become an essential part of her life and hopes to continue producing wonderful paintings for public enjoyment throughout her lifetime, and likewise, broaden her student expectations on art careers that are truly fulfilling and rewarding. |
